bulletDec. 13, Christmas party.
bulletDec. 20, No Meeting.
bulletDec. 27, No meeting.
Dec 30, 2007 Dec 30, 2007 Pancake Breakfast.

A successful Pancake breakfast once again. The weather cooperated and we were able to make a profit which goes toward making the costs of the high-adventure trips more affordable. A Huge "Thank You" to the scouts, leaders, and families who helped make this a success - especially Shawna Melnykowski (leader extrordinaire), Mr. Popadak (chef), Mrs. Nemeth (shopper), and all those who came early to set up all the tables.

Dec 13, 2007 Dec 13, 2007 Christmas party at Kendall Cliffs

Good time, no injuries, lots of food, decent pizza.
Thanks to the parents and Venture Crew for providing the extra belayers we needed to keep our scouts "climbing the walls".

Dec. 13 will be our Christmas party at Kendall Cliffs indoor wall climbing facility.  Venture Crew is invited as well.

bulletRoadrunner and Venture Patrols  are to bring a  2-liter bottle of pop/drink, and
bulletEagle Patrol and Venture Crew are to bring a snack - bag of chips/pretzels, etc.

See the facility details and waiver forms - Click Here.

You'll need a permission slip signed by a parent in order to use the climbing walls.  The form says that it needs to be signed in front of the staff person or notarized - but this is not true for scout groups - presumably because of the scout insurance.

Cost is $12 for climbing, free for the pizza party.  Payable by cash, check to "Troop 652" or you can use your scout account (popcorn sale benefit again).

Many scouts will be driven to Kendall Cliffs by parents and parents are welcome follow us out and to stay for the pizza party.  For those needing to carpool, we'll leave from the St. Basil Parking lot at 6:30 pm.  We're allowed to climb until 9 but we'll likely be finished by 8:30 and back to St. Basil's by 9pm.

We'll have pizza, paper plates and cups to go along with the snacks and drinks brought by the scouts.

Directions from St. Basil's: (It's about 2 miles east of Camp Manatoc - where we Summer Camp on the same road the Manatoc is on.)  Watch out for deer on the road because they've been out in great numbers lately.

Either go South on Brecksville Road to Rt. 303 or go East on Rt. 82 to Riverview and go South to Rt. 303.

Rt. 303 east to Akron-Cleveland Rd. (this is "Old Eight" - BP station on the corner). Turn right on to Akron-Cleveland road and proceed ½ mile to the yellow caution light (Kendall Park Rd.) Turn right on Kendall Park Rd. Appalachian Outfitters is 50-yards down on the left-hand side.

Dec 6, 2007 Dec. 6, Regular Meeting dec062007mtg.PDF
bulletThere are a few Band Concerts which conflict with the meeting date so we expect the meeting to be lightly attended.
bulletThe meeting plan calls for us to start building a scale model of a rope bridge so we'll collect the materials and begin building the small scale bridge.

Nov 2-4, 2007.  Great Trail Council’s “Soar Like an Eagle” Camporall

Results:

bulletFinally a weekend with tremendous weather for camping.
bulletLots of cooking over an open fire and a hearty stew for Saturday dinner.
bulletIn the inter-troop volleyball competition we went 4 wins and 1 loss but the key factor here was that we were asked to leave the court so that other troops could participate even though we hadn't lost yet.
Nov 1, 2007

The Nov. 1st meeting will be the Patrol Leader Council Planning meeting.

The original schedule called for the Nov 1 meeting to be a regular meeting in order to prepare for the Camporall.  Since the only planning needed for the Camporall is the menu, we'll take care of that at the planning meeting.

For those who need cooking requirements for advancement, here's the plan:

Tenderfoot: will help prepare dinner on Saturday (req't 3)

Second Class: (All will be cooking their own Breakfast and lunch, actually) Plan and cook a hot breakfast and lunch over an open fire (req't 2g).  If you need this requirement, either bring your own food that you've planned or let the Scoutmaster know what food you would like him to buy while food shopping for the event.   We will have milk, juice, instant oatmeal, eggs, and a breakfast meat which can be foil cooked or pan cooked for breakfast.  Lunch will be a meat and vegetables which can be pan cooked or foil cooked.

We'll need firewood but we won't be able to take hardwood logs out of the county.  Scrap lumber will be needed - pine is OK but we should have some hardwood lumber for the cooking fires.  Let the Scoutmaster know if you can help with this.

Nov. 2007 Nov 2-4, 2007.  Great Trail Council’s “Soar Like an Eagle” Camporall

We camp with up to a thousand other scouts and scouters for a weekend with games and exhibits.  This is similar to the Cleveland Council's "Scouting 360" that we went to in the spring.

Munroe Falls Metro Park, 521 South River Road, Munroe Falls, OH

Click Here to view The Great Trail Council page describing the event

There are flyers, directions, and instructions for scouts and leaders.

We'll collect money and permission slips by the troop meeting on Oct. 18 because the registration is due in to the Akron Council office by Oct. 23.

Click Here for the permission slip.

Cost for the weekend will be $30 to cover registration ($9) and food.  We'll credit back to your account whatever we don't spend on food and fees.  Adults need to pay the registration fee as well.  An extra $5 is charged if scouts or adults sign up after the 23rd because the event late fee is $5.

2nd Year Webelos can participate as Boy Scouts!

According to the Camping Guidelines in the “Guide to Safe Scouting”, a Webelos Scout may participate in overnight den camping when supervised by an adult. In most cases, the Webelos Scout will be under the supervision of his parent or guardian. It is essential that each Webelos Scout be under the supervision of a parent-approved adult. Joint Webelos den-troop campouts including the parents of the Webelos Scouts are encouraged to strengthen ties between the pack and troop. Den leaders, pack leaders, and parents are expected to accompany the boys on approved trips. Note: an interpretation from National BSA is that this is a 1-to-1 for each Webelos Scout (1 adult for each Webelos). Also, the “Guide to Safe Scouting” states, “When staying in tents, no youth will stay in the tent of an adult other than his or her parent or guardian.”

There is a $5 charge for Cub Scouts and 2nd Year Webelos who are not camping with the troop.  The parents are free.

Check-in is on Friday before 9 pm and check-out is Sunday by 11 am.

Class A uniforms are needed for the ceremonies but Class B shirts can be worn for the activities.

Sept 27, 2007
bulletSept 27, Troop Open House at St. Basil's  - on the grounds instead of at Oak Grove.  We invite Webelos and others to sample our cooking, see our campsite and learn some scout skills.

1st and 2nd year Webelos and their parents are invited to see Boy Scout Troop 652 in action on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 pm at the St Basil Parish Grounds. (This is the same program we've run on previous years at the Oak Grove picnic area in the Brecksville Metropark.)

Troop 652 is having an open house "show" Thursday (9/27/07) at 7:30 pm at the St. Basil Parish grounds on Brecksville Rd. There's a small chance of a thunderstorm in the forecast so we'll move the event inside if needed.

We'll be demonstrating, for your Webelos and parents, a sampling of what Boy Scouts can do starting at 7:30. We'll set up a camp site with campfire, tents and patrol boxes, stoves, etc., and staff a couple of scout skills stations. There will be some "hands-on" stations. We may cook something too. We've already gathered the sticks for making S'mores over the campfire. If you want to watch the scouts organize themselves and prepare for our guests you're welcome to arrive early (we start at 7:10).

It should end at 8:15 unless everyone's having too much fun. It will definitely be over by 8:30 pm.

Scouts should be in uniform. Attending this event will meet at least one of the Webelos Arrow of Light requirements. It's a "Boy Scout-oriented outdoor activity".

Please encourage your Webelos, parents and siblings to join us on this evening. Please forward this message to others you think may/should be interested. My contact information may be out of date.

If you can't make it to this event, your next opportunity to visit the Troop at an outdoor activity will be October 13 when we'll be camping at Hale Farm & Village.

Sept 15, 2007 There was Den Chief Training on September 15th.
Brian and Jeramie attended.
Cost is $20 and includes the Den Chief Handbook. It's being conducted at a West Side location so sign up at the troop meetings and we can work out car pooling arrangements.

It's mid August and that means the North and the South are at war again at Hale Farm and Village. This is one of the most popular activities at Hale Farm and that means lots of people. Lots of people means lots of cars. We help out Hale Farm every year by directing traffic. After all cars are in place we go in and watch the battle.

We are invited to set up camp and stay overnight with the re-enactors.

Date: August 11 and 12 (Jimmy Popadak's Eagle COH is Aug. 12, but not until 5 PM so we are OK)

Time: Gates open at 10 AM, but we would like the scouts and adults to be there at least 30 minutes early to pick up orange vests, help set up the parking area, and be briefed on the parking pattern. We finish around 2:30 or 3 PM and go in to watch re-enactment and walk around campsites. Any number of hours you can give are greatly appreciated.

Attire: Class A uniform

Camping: Not required, but very cool experience.   Cost will be low and will depend on the menu for a Dinner and a Breakfast.

June 17-23, 2007 June 17-23, 2007. Summer Camp at Camp Manatoc  Results.

Congratulations!  Lots of 1st and 2nd Year campers made for a high-energy camp.  We were so busy doing the camp activities that we barely had time for some troop-only campfires at our site.  The "games" got rained out on Tuesday so the 1st year's have yet to experience this "thrill of victory" aspect of camp.

Check the list of Merit badges earned to verify that we have records for all of your badge work - including partials. 2007_summercamp_merit_badges_earned.pdf

Family Night had lots of friends and families and a decent showing of Webelos from Pack 59,  and Pack 649.  Pack 378 wanted to come, too.  Thanks to all the families for bringing all the great dishes and desserts.  Especially to Mr. D. Genco for bringing the troop grub and to Mr. Sefcovic and Mr. T. Genco for cooking it all up.

Razorback Steak lyrics are available in the Reference section.

Also, check out the Summer Camp Outcomes Study to see if you've had the kind of experience at camp that the study finds most valuable.

June 20, 2007 You're Invited!

Boy Scout Troop 652 invites all Troop and Crew members and their families and Webelos Scouts and their families to visit us at our Summer Camp "Family Night" picnic dinner on Wednesday, June 20, 2007.

(Pack 649 - everyone's invited to help introduce scouting at another level to your scouts and families - spread the word.)

Please encourage your Webelos, parents and siblings to join us on this evening. Please forward this message to others you think may/should be interested. My contact information may be out of date.

Our Boy Scout Summer Camp at Manatoc runs from June 17 through June 23. Wednesday evening (June 20) is "Family Night". We have the families in to visit with their scouts after a nice closing ceremony on the parade ground (by the flagpole) behind the Admin Building. We cook up burgers and dogs and the troop families bring sides and desserts.

Webelos and guests just bring appetites - unless you have a special dish that you'd like the scouts to marvel over.

After dinner, the camp merit badge sites usually have cool demonstrations to wow the families and scouts. Come visit a Boy Scout Troop at a "Boy Scout-oriented outdoor activity" (Arrow of Light requirement #4), review our campsite, tour the facilities, and enjoy a hearty cookout dinner hosted by the troop.

May 19, 2007 TROOP AND CREW- The crew has set up a whitewater rafting trip to the New River in West Virginia. Troop members and their families are invited.  We will be rafting with the North American River Runners and camping there.

They have many extras to offer such as paintball, basketball, ropes course, and climbing tower. We will have time to enjoy these but they are not included in the cost of the trip.

The cost of just the rafting and camping is $75 per person. Food and travel have yet to be determined but I am estimating about $20 per person more. Shawna has reserved 10 spots thus far.

We need definite decisions on whether you will be going by this Thursday at the meeting, May 10th, so I can make the proper arrangements with the rafting company.

If you would like to come down and just camp with the troop/crew it is $8 per person per night camping fee.

The age limit for rafting is 12 years old and up. I will be collecting the rafting and camping fees ($75) at the May 10th meeting so please have them ready. If we get more than 16 people to raft we will get a discount. All minors must have a waiver form signed by their parents. The form can be found at www.narr.com under downloads. Troop/Crew permission slips will be passed out at the May 10 meeting.

When: May 19-20th, 2007 Depart: 8 am Saturday, May 19 Arrive Home: ~ 9 pm Sunday Cost: $75 per person plus travel and meal fees.

If anyone has any questions or concerns please contact me Shawna by phone or at Thursday's meeting.

Those working on the Electricity Merit Badge must attend this session. This session will complete the badge.

If you haven't started the badge yet, attend this session and make up the others later. You'll be running wires and installing electrical boxes in sections of typical wood/drywall "walls" that the counselors will have made up.

bulletThose who already have completed the Electricity Merit Badge will be sharpening the troop axes and putting points on the "staffs" that we'll use to raise the Dining Fly at Summer Camp.

Jan, 2007 Congratulations to all who attended the Jan 27, CPR Training at the Brecksville Rec Center.  It's not easy stuff, is it?

For those who needed the CPR requirements for Swimming and/or First Aid Merit Badge,  the "practical" test where you demonstrated your technique is more important than the written test results needed for American Red Cross certification.

Many thanks to Dee and Shawna for taking the time and putting forth the effort for our benefit.

Jan 27, 2007 Jan 27, CPR Training at the Brecksville Rec Center at 8:30 am - 12:30 (maybe a little later than 12:30 because we're really full).

The cost is $15 for what is normally a $45 course for American Red Cross Adult CPR certification. The dummies and instructors are donated but the booklets, quick-reference reminder cards, and certificates add up to $15. Bring cash or check made out to "Troop 652".

We've got more than 20 people signed up so it will be pretty busy.  All of the First Aid MB scouts are in, some Webelos, and some others.

Jan 25, 2007 The January 25th meeting will  be outdoors at Oak Grove Picnic Area in the Brecksville Reservation.  We'll play with the Klondike Sled and ropes and practice the Webelos Bridging Ceremony.  Based on past experience, all we have to do is schedule the "Snow Fort" event so that we can enjoy 60 degree weather.  Nah!
Feb. 1, 2007 Feb. 1 Meeting is the Court of Honor.

Parents, family, friends and neighbors are welcome to see our scouts be recognized for their accomplishments.

Get your uniforms tidy!

Friends of Scouting presentation is expected.

Troop 652 has a Uniform Exchange program for our members.  We keep uniform shirts that have been outgrown, green pants, and hiking boots in our closet.  We're low now because we had some mildew in the closet in '06 but we recognize that the younger scouts grow through sizes very quickly and uniform shirts and boots can be a big expense.

For a wider net, Troop 526 in North Royalton is starting a "Uniform Exchange" program for all scout units in the area.  They accept gently worn scout items and distribute items received "as is" to local Scouts at no cost.  Visit the Troop web site at www.troop526.org and select "Uniform Exchange" to learn more about this program. The available items list is updated as donations are made, so check back often!

Congratulations to the Scouts who ran the sled to 2nd place in the Klondike Race on Jan. 20.  We aced some events and didn't score all that well on a few of the events but we had some fun.  Patches will be awarded when they arrive.  Some photos have been added to our album.  Click the "Photos" button in the left margin.

Jan 11, 2007 Jan 11 meeting, We'll be preparing for the Jan. 20 Klondike Derby (Like a Camporee).  Cost will be $10 which covers the $7.50 entry fee and $2.50 for food.  Payable by cash, check to "Troop 652", or on your scout account.  Sign up early and often!
Philmont Fund Raisers - The cost is preventing a few scouts who want to go so we're trying to provide as many opportunities as we can for the scouts to join the trek.  The Pancake Breakfast on 12/31, the Max & Erma's 20% of the check deal on Jan.  9th, and others as we can come up with them.  Car washes in the spring of course.

For now, we need some help passing out letters to local restaurants and shops asking for their help.  The letter simply asks for a fundraising opportunity like the one that Max & Erma's has.  All Philmont crew members should print off two copies of the letter (in color if possible) and give them to the managers of your favorite restaurants.  (Click Here for the letter)  Explain to them what we are doing and why we need their help.  We already have some restaurants spoken for so please don't take anymore to Pickleworks, Simons, the Boneyard, Ruby Tuesday's, Chipotle, or Mavis Winkles.  Please let me know which stores you have taken your letters to so we may keep track of our success. This is also a reminder to those who already have the letters to please get them to the stores ASAP.
Jan 15, 2007 Jan 15, 07 (MLK Day) We've been invited to attend Pack 59's January meeting with another Troop from Brecksville to let the scouts and families get to know who we are and what we're all about so that they can decide which troop they'll join after their Blue & Gold on Feb. 25th.
Jan 9, 2007 Jan 9 (Tues) A novel Fundraiser for the Philmont Crew is afoot!  Come enjoy a fine lunch or dinner with us.

Max & Erma's on Tiedeman at 480 will donate 20% of the dinner bills to help lower the cost of the trip.  But there's a special "coupon" diners will need to make their meals count for the fundraiser.

Print the coupon (Click Here) and pass it out to friends and family.  Or save it and email it to them.
Jan, 2007 There's a new link on the "Links" page for the Blue Ridge Mountains Council site describing their High Adventure camps.  The High Knoll adventure was recommended for a Philmont-like weeklong hiking adventure with a little bit of summer camp-like skill building.  The water camps look good too.
